A Global Outlook

Since 1990, I’ve been active as a teacher, researcher, and writer.

Much of that time, from 1996 to 2021, I was a professor at IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland, one of the world’s leading business schools.  Areas of expertise included strategy, organization design, and critical thinking, which led me to write The Halo Effect.

While at IMD, I directed programs with many leading companies and led the EMBA for six years.  Working with executives from around the world – across Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and South America – has been a source of great enjoyment.

Before IMD, I was assistant professor at Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts, from 1990 to 1996.  I received my PhD from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, in 1990.

Before Academia

Prior to my career in academia, I worked with Hewlett-Packard in California, following an MBA from the University of California, Los Angeles.  My BA in economics is from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

My interests – which range from decision making and critical thinking, to history and politics, to popular culture and sports – are reflected in these books.

One Splendid Season

One Splendid Season tells the story of the 1912 baseball season through the words and images of the Hassan Triplefolder tobacco card set. It offers a rich portrait of baseball and its place in American society in the Deadball Era, with photographs, postcards, and other memorabilia.

The Halo Effect

The Halo Effect is an award-winning book about critical thinking in the business world. It is based on my 25 years as a professor at IMD and, before that, six years as assistant professor at Harvard Business School. It challenges managers to develop their skills of critical thinking, and not to be deceived by so much of the poor thinking that pervades the business world.

12 Angry Men

12 Angry Men is the story of one of America’s most beloved dramas and the man who wrote it, Reginald Rose. It describes the early days of television, the inspiration for Rose’s jury-room drama, the making of the 1957 movie, and how 12 Angry Men has been embraced by two different fields: law and management.
